Prichard's Distillery develops new old rum bottle

December 18, 2013 at 1:15pm

The iconic American rum producer in Kelso, Tennessee has developed a new bottle for their artisan rum. Prichard's Fine Rum is now available in a special bottle designed to reflect the type of hand-made bottles once used for American rum before the American Revolution.

Phil Prichard explains the idea behind the new old bottle. "When we began distilling operations some years ago, it was our goal to recreate America's first distilled spirit, a traditional American Rum very much like the rums made in New England over two hundred years ago."

While perusing through an antique shop in New England, Phil happened upon a hand blown bottle not unlike those found on sailing ships and in taverns some two hundred and fifty years ago.

It wasn't easy to find a bottle maker capable of re-creating the old style vessel.

"We turned to the Arkansas Glass Container Corporation of Jonesboro, Arkansas who, recognizing the historic significance of the bottle, diligently worked to help us bring its past to life with its classic reproduction...

The Gentleman Crook cocktail celebrates Repeal Day

December 4, 2013 at 2:15pm

As an homage to the legendary prohibition-era rum runner who's name still evokes the essence of high quality and genuine origin, here is a cocktail made with the Real McCoy rum to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Repeal Day on December 5th.

The Gentleman Crook cocktail, created by mixologist Jonathan Pogash, features a rum that reflects the high ideals of Bill McCoy and his passion for providing authentic spirits to his customers. He was the Real McCoy.

This gentleman never brook the law, but cleverly stayed offshore beyond the three mile limit with his vast stores of high quality spirits destined for American shores during the dark ages of prohibition.

When that era officially ended on December 5, 1933, Americans celebrated with unabashed enthusiasm, turning the backs on a failed experiment to enforce the conservative morality of a few on the entire population.

The Real McCoy five year old rum is a unique blend of pot and column still spirits produced in Barbados, just as it was one hundred years ago before prohibition. It's aged in American oak barrels with absolutely no additives, flavors or adulterations. This is authentic Caribbean rum...

With a defiant theme "Untameable Since 1862," the world's leading producer of rum today launched a global initiative of television, print, outdoor and digital messages to reflect their history of survival and success throughout prohibition, earthquakes, fire, war, revolution and Cuban exile, among a host of other challenges.

With a goal of uniting their brands and products, Bacardi is presenting evocative ads to inspire their customers to unleash their "Irrepressible Spirit" to live boldly and passionately. The authentic, artisan, hand-drawn bat logos from 1900s are the inspiration for these new designs.

The television, digital and print ads embody the true grit and determination that sustained the rum brand and helped it thrive. The advertising will feature headlines such as, "We Remember Prohibition -- It was a Blast;" "Some Men are Kicked Out of Bars -- Others are Kicked Out of Countries;" and "Earthquakes, Fire, Exile, Prohibition -- Sorry Fate, You Picked the Wrong Family."

Declaring "True Passion Can't Be Tamed," the campaign is designed to engage millennial consumers to pursue their passions no matter what -- much like the Bacardí family did -- encouraging camaraderie and strength of character...

Don Pancho Origenes luxury rums coming to USA

November 11, 2013 at 4:15pm

Don Pancho Fernandez, the legendary Cuban master of fine rums has created an exclusive luxury line of spirits dedicated to his origins. Terlato Wines, a leading U.S. marketer of luxury wines and spirits, announced today an exclusive, long-term agreement to import and market the Don Pancho Origenes luxury rum brand as the newest addition to its Artisan Spirits portfolio.

Globally recognized as one of the most experienced and respected master blenders in modern history, Don Pancho is working from his Las Cabras Distillery in a remote region of Panama.

At the recent German Rum Festival in Berlin, Origenes 18 received the highest score from a field of more than one hundred fine rums from around the world. Rum expert judge Robert Burr commented, "In the recent blind tasting competition in Berlin, only one rum received a perfect score from me: Origenes 18."

Terlato will import Don Pancho Origenes 30-year-old and 18-year-old rums into the United States. Future plans call for an addition expression: an eight year old rum.

After learning the distilling craft from Master Distiller Don Ramon Corrales Fernandez, Don Pancho was instrumental in modernizing Cuba's rum industry in the 1970s. After Cuba's national brand was acquired, he relocated to Panama, where, in the 1990s, he discovered a neglected distillery in the Herrera region of Panama, which he built into the Las Cabras Distillery, today one of the most important and revered in the world.

While Don Pancho has produced luxury rums for other clients for years, it is only in the last year that he stated his belief that the the quality of his aged rums merited putting his own name on them...

Cruzan delivers Distiller's Collection rums from St. Croix

August 13, 2013 at 1:15pm

Master Distiller Gary Nelthropp of Cruzan Distillery in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands has been working on a new series of exceptional rums for enthusiasts and collectors. Three new expressions -- worthy of carrying his signature on the bottle -- are now coming to market: Estate Diamond Light, Estate Diamond Dark and Single Barrel.

"Dont hurry" is a persistent theme in the marketing of Cruzan rums. The idea translates well both in terms of how the rums are made and how they might best be enjoyed by consumers.

The distillery takes pride in their policy of separating the "heart" of the rum distillate from the more objectionable heavy components derived in the late distillation cycle known as "tales." The result is a cleaner, better tasting rum that costs a little more to produce.

Cruzan Estate Diamond Light Rum
It seems a great deal of effort and care has been taken to create this new blend of aged rums -- at least five years old -- with some components reaching twelve years of age. Careful filtering has removed most color while allowing much of the smooth and mature characteristics to remain in Estate Diamond Light Rum. The result is a faintly straw-colored expression of notable quality.

With aromas of light cane and subtle aromatic oak, plus a touch of mild peppermint, the nose is very light. On the palate, we find a luscious mouth feel of light vanilla building to warm pepper, cane and delicate wood. The finish is medium long and warm.

The new 750ml bottle of Cruzan Estate Diamond Light rum at 80 proof carries a suggested retail price of $19.99.

Cruzan Estate Diamond Dark Rum
A legacy product now brought back to market, the Estate Diamond Dark Rum delivers a rich and satisfying blend of authentic aged rum -- five to twelve years in the barrel -- at a price point that can only be described as generous...

Tiki Oasis festival embraces Hawaiian Hootenanny theme in San Diego

July 28, 2013 at 2:15pm

When the hypnotic lure of Hawaiian Slack Key guitar infused with Nashville twang back in the 1930s, American music was forever instilled with the lovely tones of a new musical brew that was aptly described as Hulabilly.

The annual Tiki Oasis festival in San Diego August 15-18 features a host of island-theme culinary and musical events inspired by the Hulabilly fusion where Hawaii meets Nashville.Memphis based Elvis Presley's "Rock-A-Hula Baby" in the 1961 Grammy-nominated movie "Blue Hawaii" set the genre firmly in the annals of American culture, flooding the airwaves and movie theaters with a truly unique fusion of seemingly disparate genres that married for life. Elvis' Chadwick Gates was happy to be back home in Hawaii with his surfboard, his beach buddies, and his girlfriend Maile Duval.

In modern day San Diego, a vibrant tiki culture celebrates this faux Polynesian romanticized illusion of the South Seas through inventive and creative cocktails that reflect an island lifestyle -- incorporating a variety of luscious rums and tropical ingredients native to the Caribbean region.

The central celebration of this fun-loving subculture is the upcoming Tiki Oasis festival in San Diego August 15-18 -- centered around the Bali Hai restaurant and the Crowne Plaza Hotel...

Bundaberg Double Barrel aged rum from Australia

May 28, 2013 at 8:15pm

From the land down under, Bundaberg has released an exceptional aged rum that gains considerable complexity from creative barreling techniques.

For the Master Distillers' Collection Double Barrel aged rum, the veteran craftsmen at Bundaberg first hand selected some of the distilleries finest aged and matured reserves then submitted these to a unique finishing process under the watchful eye of their Master Distillers' Collective, bringing complexity and character to this outstanding limited edition.

This double barreling maturation process commences in port barrels, creating great depth of character and a unique smoothness, then finishes in old sherry barrels adding sweetness and balance.

Initial aromas of Bourbon and sherry notes develop into aromatic cedar/cigar box, with a pleasant sweetness balanced by dry fortified wine and over-ripe fruit, vanilla, raisins and dates, dry wine grapes, dark banana and toasted oak. As the rum airs in the tasting glass, a rich Demerara sugar note leads to a hint of cane honey, then big molasses on toasty cedar before dried cherries and very subtle cinnamon custard.

The legs on the tasting glass are abundantly viscous, suggesting long aging in wooden barrels.

On the palate, sweet ripe banana and warm honey lead to dried cherry and tart-grape (wine) with a mature woodiness building to a predictable "Bundy heat" mid-palate followed by...

He was engaged in life to the fullest. He was never a spectator.

This legendary and illustrious life was the inspiration for his epic works of popular literature.

Papa's Pilar Dark and Blonde rums have been inspired by his grand adventures on land and at sea. While Hemingway was a man of many passions, he was united with his one true constant in 1934. She became his steadfast and loyal companion, traveling with him from one port of call to the next. He took this beloved boat to Bimini and all along the Cuban coast, seeking solitude, order, and the connection to the sea that was so vital to his craft.

And Hemingway famously enjoyed his rum. He delighted in great cocktails prepared by the best bartenders using the freshest local ingredients.

At long last, two fine rums have emerged to honor his legacy and reflect his passion, developed by the Hemingway Rum Company.

Papa's Pilar Blonde Rum is a surprisingly luscious light rum, not quite white in color. Blonde and beautiful it is -- as it stands alone with rich and gutsy tones of burnt caramel, citrus and smooth vanilla leading to a creamy tropical bouquet, presenting sultry spices and a unique warmth that separates it from the crowd.

Epic is an apt description for the Papa's Pilar Aged Solera 24 Dark Rum, offering bold flavors of Crème brûlée, rich vanilla, grandmother's baking spices and roasted coffee, accented by a hint of bourbon and sherry with a very long finish that leads one right back to the tasting glass. This unique blend of rums from the Caribbean, Central America and Florida reflects the myriad cultures, terroir and traditions of the dauntless traveler...
