Neptune Three Year Aged Gold Barbados Rum coming to USA

July 18, 2017 at 5:15am

Serial entrepreneur Richard Davies had a dream of creating a fine quality rum based on the legend of Neptune, Roman God the Sea. He achieved success with Neptune Three Year Aged Gold Barbados Rum.

Having been involved in owning bars, restaurants and nightclubs in Cirencester, a market town northwest of London for many years, Richard was looking for an alternative to rums he was serving from large brands that had strayed from their origins.

The Search For Neptune Rum

His quest for a legitimate spirit led him to a legacy source of Caribbean rums in Amsterdam. Richard chose a sample from Foursquare Distillery in Barbados, a country who's flag features a Trident of Neptune on a sea blue background.

Once Richard succeeded in finding a spirit that was authentic, delicious and affordable, he began the process of developing the brand identity that could remain true to the concept.

Indeed, this Neptune Three Year Aged Gold Barbados Rum hearkens to a time when sailors greatly valued similar casks of rum from the pot stills of Barbados.

Members of the International Rum Expert Panel at the Miami Rum Renaissance Festival were among the first to sample the product while still in the development stage. Their positive feedback encouraged Richard to redouble his efforts to bring the product to the United States.

Tasting notes

This pale golden rum presents surprisingly robust aromas of butter and wood with a hint of dry vanilla before funky fruit. On the palate, a suggestion of toffee quickly dries out while tannins of wood, tanned leather and toasted banana bread lead to a warm glow in the mid-palate. Lightly charred oak lingers in the medium long finish.

The limited edition first run of Neptune Three Year Aged Gold Barbados Rum features a dramatic label with a gold embossed image of Neptune and a wooden ship sailing atop a stormy sea.

This delightful expression is bottled at 40% abv. The 750ml bottle sells for about $29.

Big 5 Gold Rum evokes wistful era

July 12, 2017 at 5:15am

A trio of rums from Florida -- including Big 5 Gold Rum -- seek to echo the spirit of rum's classic era in Cuba's high society of the 1940s and 1950s.

Modeled in the light bodied Cuban style of aged rums, Big 5 Gold Rum is a fine example of a modern spirit finished by craft distillers in artisan copper pot stills.

Echoes of a Storied Past

El "Big Five" de La Habana, once the pinnacle of Cuban society's top-rung elegant venues, included Vedado Tennis Club, the Miramar Yacht Club, the Biltmore Yacht and Country Club, the Havana Yacht Club and the Casino Español.

Big 5 Gold Rum's branding evokes a wistful remembrance of this legendary time when sugar cane -- and its signature golden elixir -- ruled the agrarian economy and was deeply ingrained in the social traditions of the Caribbean's largest island.

Tasting Notes

Big 5 Gold Rum is a light bodied spirit presenting subtle aromas of baking spices and citrus peel over the slightest hint of sweetness. On the palate, a faint echo of caramel and toffee leads to complex dry spicy notes before warmth builds at mid-palate. Lightly toasted oak dominates the medium dry finish.

Bottled at 40% abv the 750ml bottle of Big 5 Gold Rum sells for $19.

Big 5 Gold Rum received notable recognition from the International Rum Expert Panel (RumXP) judges at their annual rum tasting competition during the 2017 Miami Rum Renaissance Festival.

Marketed by Blue Ridge Spirits and Wine, Big 5 Rums are available throughout Florida at fine liquor stores and bars, as well as online retailers.

Mount Gay 1703 Master Select aged rum from Barbados

From one of the oldest rum producers in the world comes one of the finest rare aged rums ever bottled, Mount Gay 1703 Master Select.

Derived from double copper pot and single column still distillates, this spirit is a blend of 10 to 30 year old aged rums. 1703 Master Select is a deliciously complex and concentrated nectar reflecting the life-long mastery of blender Allen Smith.

A Rare and Exclusive Rum

Mount Gay releases just one batch of 1703 Master Select annually. Approximately 12,000 bottles are distributed to 85 rum markets, including the United States, Barbados, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, France and more -- making it a rare delight for the serious rum connoisseur.

Tasting Notes

The striking rich copper hues of this heavy-bodied spirit are the first signs of it's exclusive and rare qualities. The nose delivers big oak and ripe banana, baking spices and vanilla with a complexity that suggests fine cognac. The palate presents a bold, rich bouquet of toasted oak, toffee and leather before mellow notes of ripe banana, candied fruits and soft spices begin to fade slowly in the long, smooth finish.

This rum demands to be appreciated in a proper tulip-shaped tasting glass or a brandy snifter. A small taste of this concentrated elixir delivers big flavor.

The addition of a small splash of water or a single small ice cube swirled in the glass can reveal additional notes of spice and sweetness on the palette.

Presented at 86 proof, the 750ml bottle carries a suggested retail price of about $150.

When visiting Bridgetown, Barbados, don't miss a chance to tour the Mount Gay Distillery and Visitors Centre on Spring Garden Highway. Discover the colorful history of Mount Gay Rum, learn how the rum is made and savor rum samples. Lemon Hart Blackpool Spiced Rum from Guyana

June 14, 2017 at 5:15pm

A dark, rich rum, Lemon Hart & Son's Blackpool Spiced Rum is distilled, aged and blended at a single estate distillery in Guyana's Demerara region.

The Legacy of Lemon Hart & Son rums

The Lemon Hart brand history spans centuries as the first official purveyor of rum to the British Royal Navy. The ever-popular 151 dark overproof rum gained a reputation among rum enthusiasts as a key ingredient in topical cocktails and tiki themed libations long ago.

Before 2010, Lemon Hart & Son rums were aged and blended in Canada by Pernod Ricard. A small percentage of Canadian neutral grain spirit was added for taxation purposes. Since that time, a Return to Heritage program has been initiated, moving Lemon Hart's aging and blending process back to Guyana and delivering a final product that is today comprised of only 100% Demerara rums.

Introducing Blackpool Spiced Rum

This new Blackpool Spiced Rum expression carries on the tradition with a rich and complex blend of authentic Demerara rums accented with delightful spices from the Caribbean region and beyond.

Tasting Notes

Aromas begin with treacle and toasted marshmallow, burnt caramel, sweet vanilla, black coffee, dark fruit, light clove and nutmeg over a suggestion of caramel custard. On the palate, burnt caramel, brown butter and vanilla is accented by dark rich mocha, toasted marshmallow and black banana before the spices take over at mid-palate. Clove, nutmeg, cinnamon and ginger linger before fading into a hint of black pepper. Bitter oak in the finish keeps it from being cloying.

Bottled at 86 proof, Lemon Hart & Son's Blackpool Spiced Rum brings complexity and bold flavor to any tropical libation. Try it with ginger beer for a delightfully simple and refreshing highball.

The 750ml bottle is priced at about $29.

New Yolo Rum Clear expression launches in Miami

March 24, 2017 at 5:15am

You Only Live Once - so when it's time to celebrate life, enjoy the best rum with friends. That's the message behind the big launch of Yolo Rum Clear at the Miami Rum Festival, April 22-23.

Introducing Yolo Rum Clear

Yolo Rum Clear debutsJoining Yolo Rum Gold and Yolo Rum Silver, the new Yolo Rum Clear expression is a boutique-quality rum that isn't priced like it.

"For a long time now, we've wanted to produce an affordable, connoisseur-worthy rum blend," says Yolo Rum founder Philip Guerin. "And Don Pancho has once again knocked it out of the park."

At the heart of the Yolo Rum operation is master distiller Francisco "Don Pancho" Fernandez. Born in Cuba and operating out of the Republic of Panama, Don Pancho is the world's most-respected and honored ronero (that's "rum blender," for the layman).

The recipient of hundreds of awards, Francisco Fernandez starts with rare sugar cane strains found only in Central America and the Caribbean. The resulting specially prepared sugar cane juice is fermented and distilled through a complex, five-stage series, and then Don Pancho goes to work, dictating how and how long the rum is stored before choosing the blends he crafts into dark or light spirits. Aging in charred American white oak barrels does the rest.

Yolo Rum features three distinct blends for rum aficionados. Top-shelf Yolo Rum Gold enjoys a 10-year aging process that gives it a rich, tawny color and smooth buttery taste. Two-year-aged Yolo Rum Silver is the world's premium rum for mixing—if you like vodka, you'll love Yolo Rum Silver. And now Yolo Rum Clear is a bridge between the two, ideal for mixing or solo consumption, with a smooth, lightly smoked sweet-oak taste. It is truly small-batch-quality rum available at a real steal.

Yolo Rum has received multiple Best-of-Class wins from Spirits of the Americas, won multiple gold medals at the Denver International Spirits Competition and taken home multiple gold medals at the Miami Rum Renaissance Festival.

Diplomático adds Mantuano aged rum to Tradition Range

February 20, 2017 at 5:15am

Mantuano Ron Extra Añejo rum's name translates as "local nobleman" and is inspired by Don Juancho Nieto Meléndez, the 19th century character that inspirits the legend of Diplomático rums.

Don Juancho used his position of influence to benefit the development of his local region and to pursue his passion for travel and the discovery of new spirits, mainly rums. His significant impact on the rum industry and the appreciation of fine spirits in Venezuela is legendary.

This new expression in Diplomático's Tradition Range combines DUSA's signature column, batch kettle and pot still distillates created from molasses and sugar cane honey.

Aged up to eight years in white oak casks that previously held Bourbon and malt whiskey, Mantuano is precisely blended using 40% heavy pot still rum and 60% light and semi-heavy rums from the column and batch kettle stills for a fine balance.

Aromas of dried dark fruit, oak and a delicate spiciness are revealed. On the palate, a complex entry of dried fruits, wood and vanilla is well balanced, leading to a warm, semi-dry finish.

With a taste profile ideal for mixing in luxury cocktails, Mantuano's rich body and delightful complexity will also appeal to those that prefer to drink it neat.

Mantuano is bottled at 40% abv and priced at $24.

Dave Broom Rum Seminars featured at Miami Rum Fest

February 16, 2017 at 5:15am

Attendees of the Miami Rum Festival and Trade Expo in April are in for a treat with upcoming Dave Broom Rum Seminars: "Fathoming The Bowl" and "The Rum Treasure Map."

Award-winning author Dave Broom will present his unique and original series of seminars on the weekend of April 22-23 relating to his new book entitled Rum: The Manual.

Dave has been writing about drinks for more than 25 years and has twice won a Glenfiddich Award for Drinks Book of the Year and for Drinks Writer of the Year.

Rum's Rightful Place In the Spirits World

The new book seeks to dispel any mistaken assumptions about rum and it's rightful place in the pantheon of great spirits.

"This is not just a world spirit; it is a world-class spirit and has been for longer than any of us realized. It's time to celebrate rum's diversity and versatility. Charge your glasses."

Dave Broom Rum Seminars

At 5pm on Saturday, April 22 Dave Broom will present a seminar for attendees of the Miami Rum Festival and Trade Expo entitled "Fathoming The Bowl." He explores rum's peculiar history and the drinks which shaped the world. Dave Broom will be leading rum enthusiasts on a gentle wander through key points in rum's complex and convoluted history -- what were the rums, how were they made, what drinks did they make -- and plotting the rums on his newly developed Flavour Map. There could well be singing!
At 3:30pm on Sunday, April 23 Dave offers more details with "The Rum Treasure Map." While we all agree that having an increasing number of rums appearing on a daily basis is great news, it can't be denied that it's getting kinda confusing to work out what the differences are between them all. That's why he created the Rum Flavor Map for his latest book Rum: The Manual. He'll be explaining how it was put together and how it can be used -- by tasting a load of rums from all points. Find your comfort zone, workout where to explore next, see stylistic similarities and differences. It could well change the way you think about rum.

Rum: The Manual

Dave Broom will be on hand at Miami Rum Fest and Trade Expo to sign copies of the new book.

It's about how to drink rum of all kinds. It's about classic rums and new-generation rums, about rhum agricole and about premium aged rums, about rums from all over the world. It's about rum enjoyed with cola and ginger beer and about the best rum for a classic daiquiri. And, it's about rum cocktails that ooze style and personality. Above all, it's about enjoying your rum in all kinds of ways.

The days of rum being seen as a minor spirit are over. The category has been reborn in recent years with developments such as the rise of premium aged rums and spiced rums. The range of rums available has widened dramatically, with tiki bars in every major city globally. Add in cachaça -- Brazil's native cane spirit -- and you have a hugely popular distillate. So there's no surprise that the premium rum market is growing at an astonishing rate -- from 23 percent per annum in the US to 74 percent per annum in France, for example.

The mission of this book is to bust some myths and to help drinkers appreciate this complex spirit, find the style they like and discover how this versatile spirit can best be enjoyed. It will help you to understand your rum -- how it's produced (whether from molasses, cane syrup or cane juice) and whether it's dry, sweet, fresh or oaky.

Dave provides a comprehensive history of rum's sticky and storied past, as well as tasting notes for more than 100 different rums, from rich, sweet mellow Guyana rums to the vegetal peppery rums of Martinique and Guadeloupe and contemporary spiced rums.

In addition, he provides scored notes for how each rum stands up to five different preparations – with coconut water, ginger beer, cola, clementine juice and in a daiquiri. This, along with the flavor camp system Dave created, will help you to find your preferred rum and to create the perfect mix every time.

Rum: The Manual is available at books at stores worldwide and online at an other major retailers.

Attendance at the Dave Broom Rum Seminars at Miami Rum Festival and Trade Expo is limited.

Purchase tickets in advance online. No tickets will be sold at the door.
